Work has started on a new Air Berlin Group maintenance hangar at Dusseldorf Airport which will be able to house simultaneously three widebody aircraft.

Air Berlin is consolidating its maintenance operation following its acquisition of Dusseldorf-based LTU and its earlier absorption of budget operator DBA.

The new hangar, 220m (720ft) long and 90m wide, is being sited east of the terminal, next to an LTU hangar – giving maintenance personnel access to both.

It is expected to be completed in April next year.

Dusseldorf Airport’s operator says the hangar, which is part of a €300 million ($475 million) investment programme, is the largest project at the airport since the expansion of its terminal building five years ago.
