Delta Beta In-Flight completed the second installation of its Self-Contained In-Seat Entertainment (SCISE) system in the first class cabin of a Varig Brazilian Airlines' Boeing MD-11 last month.

Delta Beta is confident of securing more customers by the second quarter of next year following the successful debut of the IFE system with launch customer Varig.

Varig is equipping the six-seat first class cabins of 15 MD-11s with the system, providing 10 films and 24 hours of audio entertainment on-demand. The first Varig MD-11 equipped with SCISE has passed the three-month operations mark with a zero failure rate, says Delta Beta president Henry DeBey.

SCISE is unique in that it requires no servers or seat boxes, only passenger display units, providing weight and complexity savings compared with traditional seatback IFE systems. SCISE uses video transmission optimisation technology to distribute digital content to each passenger on-demand via a touchscreen.

The California-based manufacturer is now developing a portable unit comprising 150 SCISE systems. It hopes to show aircraft manufacturers and airlines that the system is suitable for larger installations on Airbus and Boeing aircraft, and thereby gain a wider customer base.

The manufacturer has also formed a partnership with IFE parts manufacturer Jamco for joint marketing, production and tech-nical support.
