Delta Air Lines has moved quickly to exploit the new Colombia-USA bilateral, applying to use all the new frequencies available from this October.

Following Colombia's upgrade to Category 1 under the Federal Aviation Administration's safety assessment programme, Bogota and Washington completed a new bilateral agreement in March that allows carriers from each side to add seven weekly flights each October for the next three years.

According to Miami aviation consultant Robert Booth, Delta has already signed a letter of intent with Aces to codeshare if it is granted these new rights. With the new bilateral allowing codeshares, Avianca and American Airlines are likely to upgrade their alliance.
