Rolls-Royce has secured its first US airline customer for the Trent 800, with the selection by Delta Air Lines of the Trent 892 to power its ten optioned Boeing 777-200s. The US carrier has placed a $500 million contract with General Electric to power the Boeing 767 component of the order, which includes ten 767-300ERs and 21 stretched 767-400s.
Delta placed the 777-200 options and 767 orders in March as part of its 644-aircraft deal with Boeing, which also includes firm orders for 70 next-generation 737s and five 757s (Flight International, 26 March-1 April, P4). The contract, which includes 538 options and "rolling options", launched the new 767-400 variant.
General Electric will provide the CF6-80C2B6/B7 to power the 767s. At the time of placing the order, Delta was concluding an $800 million deal with CFM International to provide the CFM56-7 engines to power the 737s. While the airline's existing 90-strong 757 fleet is entirely Pratt & Whitney PW2000-powered, the selection of an engine for the additional 757s, including that for 110 options, is still open.
