Delta Air Lines will upgrade inflight connectivity on its long-haul domestic aircraft to satellite-based wi-fi from 2016.
The 2Ku technology from Gogo will be installed on more than 250 aircraft, the Atlanta-based carrier says. These include the Airbus A319, Boeing 737-800, 737-900ER, Boeing 757-200, 757-300 and the Airbus A321 aircraft that it has on order.
“Global connectivity equals global productivity and business travellers want greater bandwidth, faster speeds and broader network coverage," says Tim Mapes, senior vice-president of marketing at Delta, in a statement.
The airline will also upgrade connectivity on its other narrowbody mainline aircraft, including the Boeing 717-200, Boeing MD-88 and Boeing MD-90, to next generation air-to-ground wi-fi from Gogo, it says.
Delta offers Ku-band satellite wi-fi on more than a third of its international fleet and plans to have 85% of the fleet equipped by the end of 2015.
