Pyrotechnics specialist Chemring has introduced a man-portable air defence (MANPAD) system signature simulator designed to allow the training of aircrew at any airfield, even in urban areas.

The device, dubbed the MANPAD weapons effect signature simulator, replicates the launch signature of a missile with a self-consuming pyrotechnic that leaves no projectile or debris. It replicates the signature of many types of shoulder-launched surfac-to-air missile, reproducing their characteristic visual and sound clues, enabling training in evasive actions, Chemring said at the Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEi) exhibition in London on 13 September.

Sales and marketing director Steve Blades said the device has been selected by the US Department of Defense for training.
