Smartstem exploits wireless communications to improve the measurement and reporting of aircraft tyre pressures – a key function because improper pressures can reduce tyre life and even lead to accidents. It replaces the tyre’s existing inflation valve stem with one that senses and communicates pressure, temperature and other information to a control unit on the aircraft or to a handheld reader.
SmartStem has been part of the Crane tyre and brake monitoring system on all new-production Boeing 777s since May this year and is being developed for a similar application in the 787.
