A powerful suite of air-to-ground surveillance and data transmission for civil maritime patrol aircraft is one of the highlights of the Swedish Space Corporation presence here.

Lead applications for the company’s MSS 6000 maritime surveillance system include the detection of oil spills and other environment-damaging incidents in national waters. The suite comprises a side-looking airborne radar (SLAR), an infra-red/ultra-violet line-scanner, an automated identification system to handle ship identity information, a range of infra-red and visible-light cameras, and Inmarsat satellite communications for transmission of images and other data to ground commanders.

During the mission data from the sensors is processed, integrated and presented to the system operator on a single display.

Transport Canada recently ordered its third MSS 6000 for installation on a Bombardier Dash 7 patrol aircraft tasked with surveillance in the Canadian Arctic during the shipping season and over the Great Lakes in the rest of the year. Canada’s first MSS 6000 entered in 2006 and is used primarily for anti-pollution surveillance in the Atlantic, Quebec and Ontario regions. The second, to be installed and commissioned by the end of the year, will be used over Canada’s west coast and western Arctic waters. The third system is due to be delivered next summer.
