It might not be ready to announce the selection of a new fighter yet, but the United Arab Emirates is firmly committed to continuing its policy of making major military investments, its senior air force official says.

“While the UAE faces no armed conflict, civil war or internal instability, we must remain vigilant,” UAE Air Force & Air Defence commander Maj Gen Mohammed Bin Suwaidan Saeed Al-Qamzi told INEGMA’s Dubai air chiefs conference (DIAC) on 16 November. “We must maintain a strong air force and air defence to continue to protect our national and regional interests.”

In addition to acquiring new equipment, this process will include the streamlining of training activities, to boost the UAE’s ability to work with fellow Gulf Cooperation Council members and other allies. Joint command and control systems are also needed, he says.

“We are continuing to invest in technology and people to reach the level of connectivity, commonality and interoperability needed to be part of any coalition effort,” Al-Qamzi says.

Providing an opportunity for air force leaders from around the globe to share their experiences, the DIAC event featured delegations from 45 nations.
