European budget carrier Easyjet will introduce a checked baggage charge next month despite ongoing increased security checks on hand baggage in its largest market, the UK.

Passengers who book flights from 1 September will still be able to check one item of baggage into the hold free of charge, but will be required to pay £5 ($9.40) for each additional item if paid in advance via the carrier’s internet site. This charge will double to £10 per extra item if paid at the airport at the time of departure.

The total weight limit for checked baggage will remain at 20kg (44lb), regardless of the number of items.

Easyjet, which unlike Irish low-cost rival Ryanair has until now resisted charging for checked baggage, says the measure has been introduced to speed check-in and “in light of the new airport security arrangements, which are expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future”.

Under the new restrictions, implemented on 10 August after an alleged terrorist plot to attack transatlantic aircraft was thwarted, passengers are limited to one small piece of carry-on baggage, with no liquids contained within.

“We are now taking action to adapt our policies to the new security measures, in a way which will benefit all our passengers,” says EasyJet chief executive Andy Harrison. He adds that the new baggage charge will “speed up check-in and security and make the airport experience better for everyone”.
