Canadian aero satellite communications manufacturer EMS Satcoms today unveiled two new products designed for retrofit to mid-sized business jets to support Inmarsat’s 432kbit/sec-per-channel SwiftBroadband service.

Unlike previous offerings from the Ottawa-based company, the new eNfusion System 6 and System 7 support SwiftBroadband only, with no provision for the earlier Classic Aero and Swift 64 services. The two new products are designed to give operators a choice between getting SwiftBroadband through a top-specification high-gain antenna (System 6) or a cheaper and less complex intermediate-gain unit (System 7). Both provide high-quality voice, data and Internet connectivity through wireless laptops and smaller devices such as the BlackBerry and iPod Touch.

“These products are aimed at business jet users who want a worldwide office-in-the-sky capability at an affordable price,” says satcom sales VP Steve Newell. “They feature a high level of integration, requiring the installation of just three components in the aircraft. Competing systems need more boxes to yield a comparable capability.”

System 6 comprises the new eNfusion HSD-467 high-speed data terminal, EMS’ proven AMT-3800 high-gain antenna and the CCU-200 communications convergence unit. System 7 substitutes the AMT-3500 intermediate-gain antenna for the high-gain unit.

CCU-200 is the latest in a series of cabin networking devices from EMS Satcom. It builds on the CNX Cabin Gateway range of servers/routers by adding a private branch exchange (PBX) to support dual-channel voice communications.
