Bombardier (stand 7011) and Honeywell (stand 7041) have received supplemental type certificate to retrofit and forward-fit Honeywell's new Primus Elite liquid crystal displays into Bombardier Global Express aircraft.

The $140,000 upgrade replaces the six 10.4in (265mm) CRT displays in the aircraft's Honeywell Primus 2000XP system with six LCD DU-875 displays of the same diagonal measurement. Downtime is expected to be three weeks, requiring no cockpit panel modifications, limited wiring changes and no additional pilot training.

The upgrades will allow operators to begin using XM graphical weather, Jeppesen electronic charts and maps, and video displays through a cursor-driven, on-screen interface. Bombardier plans to certificate Honeywell's SmartView synthetic vision system for the cockpit as well.

Market potential for the upgrade is substantial, with 383 Global Express aircraft of three varieties - Global Express, Global 5000 and XRS - in operation as of 31 January.

Potential buyers have to act quickly. Once the new Rockwell Collins-built Global Vision cockpit upgrade enters service on the Global 5000 and XRS models in 2012, however, the Honeywell avionics suite will no longer be offered, says Bombardier.
