Universal Avionics has completed flight-test activities for its in-development AHS-525 attitude heading reference system as it homes in on certification in the third quarter of 2013.

"We are very pleased with flight testing of the new AHS-525, as it has performed at or beyond expectations," says Paul Damschen, Universal Avionics manager of airworthiness and flight operations.

"We expect it to exceed customer expectations, and our confidence has allowed us to start using the AHS-525 in [instrument meteorological] flight conditions already," he says.

The new system does away with "fragile" mechanical "spinning gyroscopes", says Universal. The new unit is now available for order and delivery scheduling.
