In the run-up to Eclipse Aviation's selection of a new engine supplier for its troubled Eclipse 500 jet programme, the New Mexico-based manufacturer has revealed configuration, performance and cost changes.
All are tied to the forthcoming adoption of a heavier, more powerful engine to replace the problematic Williams International EJ22. Changes include a 13% payload weight increase to 1,000kg (2,250lb) and a 20kt faster maximum cruise speed of 695km/h (375kt). Range remains guaranteed at 2,370km (1,280nm), despite the anticipated higher fuel consumption of the new engine, expected to be either the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW610 or a turbofan derivative of the Honeywell LTS101.
Aircraft certification will move to the first quarter of 2006, two years late. A price increase above the targeted $1 million has also been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Eclipse is fitting 1,000lb-thrust (454kN) Teledyne CAE 382-10C turbojets (F408-400) in a bid to get the flight-test effort under way, although they are unsuitable for the production model.
