Egypt has passed a law allowing private investors to build and run airports, paving the way for a series of build-operate-transfer (BOT) schemes. The first such scheme is under negotiation for Mersa Alam Airport, which will serve the Red Sea tourist resorts. A Kuwaiti-led consortium is in talks with the Egyptian civil-aviation authority for the project, which includes terminals and a 3,000m (1,600ft) runway.
