EgyptAir has disclosed that one its Airbus A320s has been hijacked.

“Our flight MS181 is officially hijacked," says the airline in an official social media post.

It adds that the jet was on a domestic flight from Alexandria to Cairo when the pilot had to divert the aircraft when informed that a passenger claimed to be in possession of an explosive belt.

The aircraft has since landed at Larnaca in Cyprus, where negotiations are ongoing, says the airline.

There are 81 passengers on board the aircraft.

Flightglobal’s Fleets Analyzer shows that EgyptAir has 55 aircraft in service, including 14 Airbus A320 family jets.
