Portugal has selected the EH Industries EH101 to meet its long-range patrol requirement for eight to 12 helicopters.

The decision is significant because it is the first time a competition between the EH101 and Sikorsky S-92 has been decided. It is also the first of three programmes in Europe in which the two machines are pitched against each other. The Nordic Standard Helicopter Programme is evaluating both machines as well as the NH Industries NH90, while Ireland is evaluating the pair along with the Eurocopter EC725 and the continuation of buying in search and rescue (SAR)services from CHC.

The Portuguese defence minister has recommended that the EH101, powered with Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 engines, is the best machine to meet its needs, with the EH101 with the General Electric CT-7/T700 engine second and the S-92 third, say sources.

The decision can be appealed by Sikorsky or GE, says an industry source. If no appeal is received by the end of this month, Portugal will begin negotiations with EHI.

Ireland is seeking three SAR helicopters with options for two more to be used for army transport. Defence minister Michael Smith said in May that a decision would be made this year. A down selection to two helicopters is expected to be made within the next few weeks.
