Elbit Systems has won a long-running competition to supply and operate light aircraft for the Israeli air force's basic training programme. The company will supply Grob 120As as part of the deal.
The Israeli air force has funded the 10-year programme as a private finance initiative (PFI), similar to deals done in the UK and elsewhere. This is the service's first PFI, with others expected in the future.
Elbit subsidiary Cyclone will buy, operate and maintain the aircraft, with the air force paying for the service based on the number of hours flown.
The air force believes the PFI will save money because a private company will operate and maintain light aircraft more efficiently. Israel Aircraft Industries had also been competing for the deal.
The new trainers will replace Piper PA18-150 Cubs and some elements of the Fouga CM170 Zukit (Magister) syllabus.
The G120s will be operated in accordance with Israeli civil aviation authority regulations.
