Elisra has developed a new hostile fire indicator system to protect slow and low-flying aircraft and helicopters from attack by small arms fire, shoulder-launched rockets and rocket-propelled grenades.
The company says the system uses infrared sensors to "stare" at the area below and to the side of an aircraft's flightpath, detecting and identifying projectiles being fired at the host platform. Information on the precise location of the fire source will allow the crew to take a number of evasive manoeuvres, it adds.
Jointly owned by Elbit Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries, Elisra says it has developed the system in response to attacks on slow and low-flying aircraft in Afghanistan and Iraq.
