Emirates Airlines has selected Rolls-Royce to supply 320kN (72,000lb) Trent 700 engines for its fleet of 16 Airbus Industrie A330-200s. The order is worth $500 million. The airline has already ordered the Trent 800 to power its Boeing 777s.

The deal is expected to be signed on 17 March, Emirates says.

Delivery of the 16 long-range A330-200s will start in January 1999 and continue at a rate of four a year until 2002. The carrier is to operate some of the A330s with a two-class, 272-seat cabin and some with three classes and 243 seats. It is already flying three of its 777-200s, and the first of four 777-200 increased-gross-weight aircraft is due in April, with all deliveries scheduled to be completed by September.
