The demise of part of British aviation history, British World Airlines, cannot be blamed on the events of 11 September.

British World Airlines went into receivership on 13 December because of unimaginative leadership which, over the past 12 years or so, systematically stripped the airline of its most important asset - people and their skills.

The employees were the source of new ideas and could have made a huge contribution if only management had encouraged innovation.

The inability to add value to the business meant that the airline was destined to eventually run out of momentum, and the company has now paid the price for treating its employees as "a cost" for more than a decade.

One day the true story of British World Airlines and its demise will be published.
