Boeing has conducted the first flight with a 787 powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-TEN engine, which is also set to be fitted to the first 787-10 test aircraft.
The 787 with the new engine carried out its flight at Boeing Field, the airframer’s facility in Seattle.
Rolls-Royce has developed the Trent 1000-TEN as the standard powerplant for the twinjet type, and it will be used across the 787 family.
Test flights have already been conducted with the engine installed on a Boeing 747 testbed airframe at Tucson.
The powerplant is an evolution of the current Trent 1000 and has been developed with the use of technology derived from the Trent XWB programme for the Airbus A350, as well as Rolls-Royce’s Advance engine research effort.
Rolls-Royce says the decision to fit the powerplant on the 787-10 – which is set to make its maiden flight next year, for entry into service in 2018 – as a “great honour”.
