Ethiopian Airlines will seek to quadruple the number of pilots, cabin crew and technicians it trains each year in a bid to deal with the challenge of staff leakage to rival airlines, and to raise additional revenue, says its head of MRO services.
The carrier’s aviation academy will increase its annual intake of students from 1,000 to 4,000 over the coming years not only to lessen the effects of staff being poached by other airlines but also to “export” them as part of a group target to raise revenue to $10 billion by 2025, says Zemene Nega.
“Our strategy is to train more people and avail them to the market whether for Ethiopian Airlines or those interesting in having them – that’s our main strategy,” he says.
Nega adds that it is most likely staff will be subcontracted out and remain Ethiopian Airlines employees.
The aviation academy is one of seven profit centres Ethiopian plans to use to raise annual profits to $1 billion by 2025, alongside its catering, MRO, ground handling, and cargo operations arms.
