Eurocopter has launched a higher-rated version of the twin-engined AS355 N Squirrel with Turbomeca Arrius 1A1 engines and unveiled upgraded versions of the EC135 at the US Helicopter Association International's (HAI) Heli Expo air show taking place in Dallas, Texas this week.
The new Twin Squirrel (known as the TwinStar in North America) has enhanced hot and high performance and enhanced CAT A performance, allowing it to take off at maximum take-off weight (MTOW) in adverse climatic conditions. The launch is seen as a response to the launch of the Bell Helicopter 417, an uprated version of the 407. The MTOW with a sling load will be increased by 200kg (444lb) to 2,800kg, representing a 20% increase in external load thanks to an extra 500kW (670shp) of mechanical power achieved by integrating the main gearbox into the 1A1s, similar to the AS350 B3 Squirrel single.
"This new aircraft has been launched to meet the needs of a wide range of worldwide customers, for corporate transport or several utility missions," says Eurocopter.
Similarly, the EC135 light twin has been launched in a new increased take-off weaight variant, the EC135 T2i (to be known as the EC135 P2i in Europe). Eurocopter was granted European Aviation Safety Agency certification on 21 February for an increased take-off weight of 2,910 kg, up from 2,835 kg. The increase of MTOW is complemented by a reduction of empty weight to 1,455 kg, which together gives the EC135 an empty weight ratio of 50% and increasing useful load by 80kg. This could be used to transport one additional passenger or increase range by 100km (55nm), says the Franco-German airframer.
Eurocopter meanwhile announced the order from the Lithuanian border guard for two EC135s and one EC145 to join its existing two EC120s in an €18 million contract.
