On 18 June the European Union's Council of Transport Ministers finally adopted the regulation creating the long-promised European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). "This is a decisive step as we now have the essential instrument for a real European air safety policy, ensuring the highest level of protection for our citizens while enabling our aviation industry to compete on level terms with the world market," says transport commissioner Loyola de Palacio. National aviation authorities will continue as local licensing, safety oversight and enforcement bodies for EASA.
