Delta realignment

Delta Air Lines has replaced its chief financial officer (CFO) Mike Palumbo in an executive realignment. Palumbo, who had worked with Delta chief executive Gerry Grinstein at Western Airlines in the 1980s, joined Delta in April 2004 when its then-CFO, Michele Burns, quit to join a power services company.

But Palumbo has now left Delta “to pursue other interests”. He will be replaced by Edward Bastian – a former Delta executive who had left for posts at a lighting and chemical company, Acuity Brands. Bastian will replace Palumbo immediately.

Delta also hired an Alitalia executive, Glen Hauenstein, to serve as executive vice-president and chief of network and revenue management. He was part of the Turnworks Consultancy team hired in mid-2003 to help restructure Alitalia and later became chief commercial and chief operating officer of the Italian carrier.

Other moves see Delta promoting Jim Whitehurst from his roles in network and planning to chief operating officer, while senior vice-president and chief of operations, long-time pilot Joe Kolshak, is promoted to executive vice-president and chief of operations, adding government affairs to his portfolio. Lee Macenczak is promoted to executive vice-president and chief of customer service while Paul Matsen becomes executive vice-president and chief marketing officer with new responsibilities for Delta’s technology units and its corporate communications.
