US noise limits for single-engined propeller-driven aircraft will be harmonised with those in Europe under a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) published by the US Federal Aviation Administration.

The NPRM reduces the noise limit for aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of less than 570kg (1,260lb) by 6dBA, and by 3dBA for aircraft weighing above 1,500kg. The limits will apply to new and supplemental type certifications for which application is made after 4 November.

Aircraft in production already meet the proposed standards, according to the FAA, which says the main aim of the NPRM is to simplify airworthiness approvals by making US noise regulations more consistent with international standards.
