Futures Day at the Farnborough Innovation Zone will star two young GKN Aerospace engineers, Laura Cundy and Karen Murphy, who plan to inspire an audience of young people from around the country by demonstrating how engineering "Makes Things Fly".

Cundy, a stress engineer, and Murphy, GKN Aerospace's intellectual property manager, will demonstrate basic principles of aircraft design and manufacture, showing how wings enable aircraft to take flight. They will show why particular materials - such as carbon fibre, aluminium and plywood - are used, and how parts are rigorously tested to ensure their flightworthiness.

Talking about her work, Cundy says: "I love engineering because, unless it grows in the ground, everything we come in to contact with in life has been 'engineered' in one way or another."

Murphy adds: "I love my job as it focuses on the cutting edge of aerospace technology. Whenever an engineer within our company, anywhere in the world, comes up with a new idea they contact me to tell me all about it. My job is to ensure that all of these bright ideas within our company are protected, ensuring that GKN remains a world leader in aerospace manufacturing."

GKN Aerospace is a silver sponsor of Farnborough's Futures Day and the Innovation Zone - where the company is an exhibitor. GKN technology director Rich Oldfield says: "Futures Day is an important opportunity for us to reach out to young people already interested in aviation but who may not have considered engineering as a career."
