The leaden grey skies casting an oppressive pall over the first day of Farnborough were brightened early on Monday as the UK’s newest fighter finally put in a long-overdue public appearance.

Accompanied by the BAE Systems Hawk T1s of the UK’s Red Arrows aerobatics team, which carved a vermillion ark through the gloom, the Lockheed Martin F-35B finally reached Farnborough having aborted a previous attempt two years ago.

The display ushered in a defence spending spree from the UK government to kick off the show.
