Twenty-seven people are reported to have been on board an Indonesian-operated Xian MA60 turboprop which crashed off the coast of West Papua.
The Chinese-built aircraft is said to have come down near Kaimana airport, and local reports indicate several fatalities.
Jakarta-based Merpati still features on the European Commission's airline blacklist.
It ordered 15 MA60s in 2006 although financing issues caused hold-ups in the delivery of the twin-engined type.
