“We’re in the in-flight entertainment business – and that’s fun,” David Gray, founder of Flight Display Systems (FDS), said yesterday. To show that he is as good as his word, the Georgia-based in-flight entertainment hardware specialist is giving away one XM Roady2 satellite radio receiver every hour throughout the show.

The compact palmtop unit cab works on the ground with all types of stereo. And operators who have equipped their aircraft to receive satellite weather data can also get on-board satellite radio by combining Roady2 with FDS’s XM Satellite Radio distribution amplifier.
FDS product announcements here cover a deal with Pilatus for its PC-12 and two new ultra-compact liquid crystal displays.

The company is supplying Pilatus with a low-profile cabin display mount incorporating its 7in (180mm) high-resolution screen. Switching of up to three sources is controlled on the screen, allowing passengers to move between dual video inputs and an FDS moving-map display.
On show at the FDS booth (3273) are a 10.4in LCD screen that the company describes as the thinnest and lightest on the market. Less than half an inch thick and weighing 3.8lb (1.7kg), the low-profile screen offers 800 x 600 resolution and can work with a variety of video inputs, including S-video, composite and VGA.

The company’s new 42in widescreen display weighs just 44.5lb – compared with 70lb or more for a comparable plasma unit - and supports 1,280 x 768 resolution. FDS has been contracted by a Texas completion center to install 16 of the screens in a fleet of Boeing MD-87s.
