Air-India moved to a loss despite sales growth of almost 10%. The carrier blamed competition and interest charges and depreciation on its B747-400s.

British Midland's pretax profit fell 7% to £4.1m (US$6.4m) but the Manx and Loganair regional airlines moved from a £5.1m loss to a £1.3m profit.

The loss came despite a $272m gain from asset sales, mainly the Aeroporti di Roma stake. Operating profit rose 3.5% to $384m.

ANA's operating income rose almost 70% to $283m as international revenue jumped 24.2%. The 1994/5 result included $145m in asset sales.

Domestic market share rose by 2 points to 52%. Sales rose 10% in krone despite higher departure taxes. There were no asset sales ($8m in 1994).

BA's net profit rose 26%, not counting the $194m USAir provision in 1994/5. Weight load factors rose 2.5 points to 70.7%, but yields rose only 0.9% and unit costs rose 3.2%. Alliances made $235m.

Profits increased more than threefold as Cargolux added Madras, Johannesburg, Detroit and New York to its network. Freight tonnage rose 19%.

Icelandair's highest profits since 1988 came as passenger numbers rose 7% to 1.13m. This year, traffic is set to rise 15% with four new destinations added.

Increases in business travel and inbound tourism helped JAL to a $159.7m operating profit, its first since 1990, after a $99m operating loss in 1994/5.

Lufthansa reduced its customary first-quarter loss as parent-company yields rose and both Condor and Lufthansa CityLine reported strong sales growth.

Total passenger traffic rose 8% to 1.9m and international traffic jumped 27% to 0.4m, helped by the new Billund-Paris route.

Strong revenue growth and faster aircraft turnarounds helped MAS' net profits up by two-thirds.

Martinair's passenger traffic rose 5% but freight traffic jumped 27% to 122,000 tons. Four new MD-11s and a B767-300ER were added to the fleet.

Sabena's group operating profit fell 42% to $25.8m as cost rises outstripped revenue growth. The net loss includes a $37m provision for fleet renewal.

Operating revenue fell by 1% in Swedish krona due to currency effects. Operating income fell 36% to $87.5m. Currency gains boosted financial income.

Airline net profit fell 6.7% to $621m. Revenue rose 5.2% but costs rose 7.3% on an 11.8% capacity increase. Subsidiaries' operating profits leapt 154%.

Thai attributes its 43% net profit rise to a 2.3 point rise in cabin factor to 69.8% and a 5.6% yield increase to 67.8 US cents per revenue tonne km.

Transavia's operating profit slumped from $9.2m to $2.8m due to lower yields and a fall in holiday traffic. The sale of three B737-200s netted $8.2m.
