Israeli carrier El Al has cancelled one of the Boeing 787-8s it had on order with the US airframer, part of a rejig of the fleet ownership structure.
El Al had indicated at the beginning of this year that it was entering a lease agreement for a 787-9 with a foreign company, a deal which would take its overall 787 commitment to 17 – comprising 10 leased and seven owned aircraft.
But it maintained, at the time, that it did not intend to acquire more than 16 of the type and that, in this respect, it was examining the possibility of amending, deferring or axing one of its 787-8 orders.
El Al has confirmed, in its third-quarter financial disclosure, that it has notified Boeing of the cancellation of a single -8.
It clarifies that is part of a rejig which will leave it with commitments for 16 aircraft, comprising 12 787-9s and four 787-8s, further shifting its fleet balance towards the larger variant.
El Al has received seven 787s, all of them -9s. It says these include four leased and three owned aircraft.
