A cargo conversion programme is being studied by Fokker Services to meet a perceived need for a Fokker F27 freighter replacement.

Fokker Services product marketing manager Leon Boenders says that of the 210 Fokker 50s now in service, some 30-50 have been identified as likely to become available up to 2002 as they come off lease or are replaced. "We are carrying out a Fokker 50 freighter feasibility study and talking to various F27 freighter operators," says Boenders. Although plans are at an early stage, Boenders expects that a conversion programme could be up and running by early 2000.

Under current plans, the conversion would involve the installation of an electrically operated 2.34 x 1.78m cargo door on the forward right hand side of the fuselage, which is similar to the door fitted on the Fokker 60 military utility aircraft. The aircraft would be able to accommodate six LD-3 cargo containers, while its payload of around 6.5t is slightly more than that of the F27 Mk500.

Other modifications will involve the installation of smoke and fire detection systems, a crash barrier and re-routeing of the air conditioning system.
