We are only self-loading cargo, but please, is someone listening?

What happened to those nice twiddly things that used to be fixed to the undersides of the overhead lockers that supplied air?

Recently my wife and I travelled overseas in an Airbus A330 - nice aeroplane, pity about the ventilation. We sat squashed, in scumbag class, next to the window, in a hot airless vacuum.

My appeal to the cabin staff person fell on deaf ears; she explained that the captain controlled the ventilation and her body language indicated that she did not want to risk any chances of promotion by asking him.

It was obvious what I had to do for the return trip. I uprated our tickets to go executive class. My reasoning was:

* We would have enough room to wriggle our toes.

* The pilots sat at the front and they wouldn't do without air. I was wrong.

Once again I spoke to the cabin person. Possibly because we were "executives", she said she would talk to the captain.

Nothing happened apart from the cabin staff, very nicely, supplied my wife with cold, damp cloths and lots of water - no she isn't, we are both pensioners.

I understand that Boeing also has the same system of ventilation, so Airbus is not alone. Has the mass hysteria of the application of modern materials and technology forgotten about the simple things of travel?
