GE has joined Virgin Australia in a consortium which aims to research and develop aviation biofuels.
The consortium will focus its efforts on pyrolytic conversion of biomass from locally-grown mallee eucalypt trees. Its aim is to open a pilot biofuel production unit in Australia by 2012.
GE will help to develop the fuel and will assist with the certification process.
Other consortium members include Renewable Oil Corporation, the Future Farm Industries CRC and Canadian biofuel company Dynamotive Energy Systems.
