Bombardier's new-generation Global Express XRS ultra-long-range business jet made its first flight on 16 January from the airframer's Downsview, Ontario facility. The 4h flight was devoted to testing basic system functionality and assessing aircraft handling and flying qualities. Bombardier says take-off weight for the first flight was 33,635kg (74,000lb), and the XRS reached a maximum altitude of 47,000ft (14,326m) and a maximum true airspeed of 520kt (960km/h). The certificate of airworthiness is expected shortly, Bombardier says, while deliveries are on schedule to start in the first quarter of 2006. The XRS will supersede the Global Express.
