Indonesian maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) firm GMF AeroAsia is looking for a strategic investor so it can gain funds needed for expansion.
The three hangars at GMF AeroAsia’s Jakarta base are near capacity, so it needs to expand, general manager marketing Iwan Zaiwansah says. “This year we are fully loaded with aircraft so we need to make more effort to accommodate all our airline customers,” he says.
GMF AeroAsia is looking at either building a fourth hangar in Jakarta or having a second maintenance base in Indonesia either at Makassar, Denpasar or Batam island, he adds.
Denpasar, the main city on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, is of interest because several international carriers operate to it. Iwan also says Makassar is under consideration because GMF AeroAsia is looking at using some of the military hangars at the airport there, while Batam is of interest because the airport has a long runway and Batam is close to Singapore.
GMF AeroAsia has already started talking to strategic investors about the initiative, but Iwan is unable to disclose when the MRO firm aims to consummate a deal.
Indonesian national carrier Garuda Indonesia owns GMF AeroAsia, but a few years ago the MRO firm was spun off as a separate business.
It has two heavy maintenance hangars – one for widebody and the other for narrowbody aircraft – while its third hangar is generally used for light maintenance, says Iwan.
