Gold Air International has placed a $60 million order for five Bombardier Learjet 45XR superlight business jets. The deal will bring the total of Learjet 45s in the Gold Air fleet to 10 and makes the UK charter company the largest operator of this type outside North America, it says. The first aircraft is set for delivery in April and the rest by year-end.

Gold Air chairman David Gold says: "We are seeing a huge demand for charter, particularly from time-conscious private individuals and company executives who are looking for safe, convenient and flexible travel." Gold says the company's market share has expanded by around 20% within 15 months . He adds: "While some of our competitors kept their older types, we decided to upgrade to new-generation aircraft and offer commonality across our fleet. We also own [rather than manage] aircraft, which gives us full control."
