Peace and Quiet Members of the House of Representatives transport committee passed a bill to ban cell phone use in US airspace. If passed by Congress the legislation - dubbed the "Halting Airplane Noise to Give Us Peace Act (Hang Up)" - would maintain a ban on in-flight voice calls but allow text messaging, email and internet use. "This is an important bill for maintaining safety and civility in the skies," says aviation subcommittee chair Jerry Costello.

Cathay Pacific The Hong Kong airline posted a rare loss for the first half as soaring operating costs and a provision to settle US cargo price fixing charges left it HK$663 million ($85 million) in the red, after making HK$2.58 billion in the first half of 2007. "The headline issue in the first half of 2008 was the relentless rise in the price of fuel. This more than eroded the strong revenue performance of the company and put it into loss," says chairman Christopher Pratt.
