After years of struggling to upgrade its safety oversight agencies, Greece has finally won the Category 1 rating under the US Federal Aviation Administration’s International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) programme. There are only two ratings – effectively pass or fail – and the IASA inspection established that the Hellenic civil aviation authority does now comply with the International Civil Aviation Organisation standards for safety oversight of its airlines and aviation industry. The country had hoped to win Category 1 by the time of the Athens Olympic Games last year, but at that time it was not judged up to standard.
