Hindustan Aeronautics has delivered its first batch of four Cheetal helicopters to the Indian air force from a 10-aircraft deal.
"The remaining six are expected to be handed over by September," says R Srinivasan, managing director of the company's helicopter complex.
A re-engineered version of HAL's Cheetah, the Turbomeca TM333-2M2-powered aircraft delivers increased range, endurance and payload over the previous type. Also equipped with lightweight modern avionics, the new type has previously been landed at an altitude of 23,200ft (7,000m).
HAL expects to receive follow-on orders for the Cheetal from the Indian army and government, with the latter eyeing it for roles such supporting internal security tasks.
