Evans and Sutherland's (E&S) hold on the UK military simulator visuals market continues, with two new contracts for its Harmony high-end system.

Thales Training &Simulation (TTS) has ordered 19 image generator (IG) channels for the UK Royal Air Force's BAE Systems Nimrod MRA4 synthetic training aids programme. The Harmony IGs will provide out-the-window imagery for the MRA4 full-flight simulators and electro-optical sensor imagery for the associated rear crew and part task trainers.

TTS has also ordered a five-channel Harmony for a simulator it is building for the British Army's Lynx Aircrew Training Service programme. The simulator will be supplied to Thales Eagle, the private-sector operator of the helicopter aircrew training centre to be built at the Army Air Corps' Middle Wallop, UK, base.

The orders come despite delays in delivery of Harmony systems for several UK programmes, including the CAE-run Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Centre and Boeing/GKN-operated WAH-64 Apache AH1 training centre. E&S says it has overcome Harmony development problems.

E&S's established ESIG-5530 image generator, meanwhile, has been selected by Mitsubishi Precision for use in simulators to be built for the Japan Air Self-Defence Force's Mitsubishi F-2 fighter. The simulator will use a six-channel IG with dome display.
