Singapore’s basic trainer competition has attracted four high-quality contestants in the Aermacchi M311A jet and Embraer Super Tucano, Pilatus PC-21 and Raytheon T-6A turboprops. But Israel’s Elbit Systems (booth A736) believes the Brazilian type has a head start in the form of its advanced glass cockpit and built-in training system.
Elbit is supplying Embraer with an avionics installation that includes three colour multifunction displays, a head-up display, up-front control panel (UFCP) and digital voice recorder. Integrated into the primary avionics fit is a virtual training system capable of simulating a tactical environment featuring ground-to-air and air-to-air threats as well as nearby friendly forces.    The company is also responsible for a wide range of complementary ground-based training equipment and services, including simulators, a cockpit procedures trainer, computer-based training, a planning and debriefing station, and autonomous air-combat manoeuvring instrumentation.
Other joint programmes by Embraer and Elbit comprise the supply of Super Tucanos to Brazil and Colombia and the Northrop F-5 fighter upgrade programme for Brazil.
