London Heathrow airport's new control tower went fully operational on 21 April, according to UK air traffic services provider NATS. This will prepare Heathrow for the operational opening of the new Terminal 5 next March. The new tower is "paperless"- meaning controllers no longer use paper flight-progress strips. Heathrow approach control is a few kilometres away at West Drayton, but this function will move to Swanwick later this year.
