Eurocopter EC135 and EC155 helicopters deployed by the German federal border police will be equipped with the Hellas obstacle-warning system developed by EADS Defence Electronics. The system is designed to enhance safety in poor visibility. The Hellas laser radar scans its surroundings with an eye-safe laser beam and is able to detect hazardous obstacles such as wires and power cables. EADS has also developed a military version of the Hellas system which will equip the NH Industries NH90 helicopter.
