The Mil Mi-171A2 has attained certification in both India and Colombia, setting the stage for exports of the type for civilian use in both countries.
The certificates were issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of India and the Special Administrative Unit of Civil Aeronautics of Colombia, according to Russian Helicopters.
The first example for an Indian customer has already been produced at the company’s Ulan-Ude factory. The company aims for type certification in China, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Peru and other countries.

Upgrades over earlier Mi-8/-17 variants include uprated, full authority digital engine control-equipped Klimov VK-2500PS-03 turboshafts, a reinforced transmission, a digital navigation system and a health and useage monitoring system. In addition, it gains a new, more aerodynamic composite main rotor – increasing rotor thrust by 700kg – and an X-shaped tail rotor, replacing the previous three-bladed design.
“The helicopters have absolutely new capabilities for operation in high-mountain and high-temperature areas,” says Russian Helicopters.
“Due to its more efficient X-shaped tail rotor, the new main rotor with all-composite blades, and improved aerodynamic profile, the cruising and maximum speed of the Mi-171A2 is 10 percent higher and the load capacity is 25 percent greater than those of serial Mi-8/17 helicopters.”
