China Aircraft Services (CAS), which provides line maintenance at Hong Kong International Airport, has opened a new aircraft hangar, allowing it to do heavy maintenance checks.
CAS says in a statement that it has held an official ceremony to open the HK$400 million ($52 million) hangar and associated buildings that will be used for heavy maintenance checks.
It says the hangar can accommodate one widebody and one narrowbody aircraft simultaneously.
The company plans to recruit over 200 employees for the heavy maintenance operation which aims to capitalise on airlines outsourcing heavy maintenance work, it says.
Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering (HAECO) has been the only provider of heavy maintenance services at the airport but in 2006 the Hong Kong Airport Authority granted CAS a license to provide heavy maintenance services.
CAS is a joint venture between China National Aviation (CNAC) with 40%, Hutchison Whampoa 20%, United Airlines 20% and China Airlines 20%.
