Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International airport is constructing an interim terminal for dedicated for international departures, as part of its expansion plan.
Speaking to FlightGlobal at World Routes in Guangzhou today, deputy chief executive Pradeep Panicker says the interim terminal will be ready by the end of the year, while the overall expansion project is expected to be completed in the next "three to four years".
He explains that the interim terminal will be able to accommodate up to 1,100 passengers per peak hour.
Panicker adds that airport expansion contracts were awarded last month, with the completion date set for 2022.
The total value of the work is reported to be around Rs40 billion ($600 million), and includes expansion of the terminal building as well as construction of airside infrastructure.
When completed, Hyderabad's annual passenger throughput will be increased to 34 million, with capacity for up to 40 million. This is up from its existing design capacity of 12 million passengers per annum.
Panicker says that Hyderbad airport today handles around 20 million passengers per year.
By 2020, Hyderabad airport will also have a third runway operational.
Hyderabad airport is 63% owned by GMR Airports, 13% each by the Telangana state government and New Delhi, and the remaining 11% by Malaysia Airports.
