Representatives of Hamburg's aviation industry have descended on the capital to present the strategy that brought success in a nationwide "leading-edge cluster" competition: one based on research, training and co-operation.

The Hanseatic city's aviation cluster is sharing a stand with Hanse Aerospace, an association of small and medium-sized enterprises, and showcasing the work of its centre of applied aeronautical research, ZAL.

Established last year, ZAL consists of a "TestCenter", under construction on the Lufthansa Technik site, and a "TechCenter" due to open at Finkenwerder in 2010. The institute's remit is focused on cabin concepts and technologies, air conditioning systems, fuselage and system integration, and hydrogen and fuel cell applications.

Hamburg's "qualification initiative - aviation industry", which encompasses the Hamburg Centre of Aviation Training, is meanwhile represented at ILA's CareerCenter. Elsewhere, the International Suppliers Center is hosting 11 members of the European Aerospace Cluster Partnership, initiated by Hamburg's cluster. Hamburg's two global giants - Airbus and Lufthansa Technik - have their own stands.

Having been named among the winners of the German government's cluster competition, the Hamburg aviation cluster is receiving €40 million ($47.9 million) of support from the federal ministry of education and research.
